The Humble Onion

White or red, got a favourite to cook with?

Notes

A slight detour away from the usual appearance of sugary sweet delicious naughtiness to my favourite basic cooking ingredient, the humble onion.

A while back I did a botanical illustration course focusing on fruit and veg, I thought it time to share a few of my savoury foodie creations with The Art of Afternoon Tea.

So, how do you like yours?

With the air flushed with the promise of Spring, the sun lingering longer in the evening sky and the smell the barbies being dusted off and fired up all around me, I’ll take mine fried, fresh from the hot plate, layered on a beef sausage, a slice of white bread, slathered with marty sauce thanks.

Bring on those long Summer Days!

wow – such an amazing drawing. Dont spose it’s for sale???

    • Thanks Kirsty! Great to see the onion gets a good response! Sadly this one is not for sale, though I am in the process of creating limited edition prints to sell online so maybe this can be one of the options since it seems to be a popular choice, would look great as a set on the kitchen wall, stay tuned for my others, the Aubergine, Garlic, Parsnip and a Ravishing Radish!

Surely this must be a photo, Al, your cake illustrations are fantastic but this is amazing! Just want to fry them up till they’re suitably caramelised and eaten just as you described. Yum.

I ask you – how else do you eat a BBQed sausage but with fried onion, tomato sauce and fresh piece of white bread? Yum, I totally agree with you.

Love this illustration – I look forward to more :) I love cooking onions (red or white!) in olive oil with garlic .. the perfect beginning to a delicious meal!

What an amazing illustration! I am very excited to see more of your botanical work! For me – a vege soup just would not taste the same without sweating a brown onion and some garlic in the pot.
